In order to fulfil the desired or required compaction efficiency, we need to select the right type of compaction equipment that is easily available in our country is that Sheepsfoot roller and Rubber-tired roller. The similarities and differences of the compaction equipment can be seen between this two equipment.
The similarities can be seen on Sheepsfoot roller is that one of the compaction equipment that is easily available in this country region. The differences can be seen which it is usually being usedto make a soil compaction for the fine-grained soil or a dirty coarse grained soil which is approximately (>20%) passing No.200 sieve. Apart from that, it is only can being used to do a smaller projects which is 40-in diameter, loaded to 0.75-1.75 tons/lineal foot of drum. Moreover, it has 60-in diameter drum (loaded 1.5-3 tons /lineal foot of drums) which means it can be used to do an earth dam project. This Sheepsfoot roller is usually need to do a compaction of impervious zone for earth dam and linings too. Beside that, it is not suitable for sandy clay type of soil this project area. Thus, this Sheepsfoot roller is not suitable for this kind of project.
However there are few characteristic of Sheepsfoot roller to be considered. Unlike rubber-tired roller Sheepsfoot roller surfaces are usually covered with slightly rounded pads or feet. It is suitable to use compaction of impervious earth dam and lining compare to rubber-tired roller which is a cohesive solid. However, Sheepsfoot just can be use in smaller project differ with rubber-tired roller where it have wide variety of rubber-tired compaction equipment. This is mean, in order to build a highway project connecting Shah Alam to Subang Jaya which the project area consists of sandy clay, this Rubber-tired roller can be used for any kind of soil compaction project and this is what our company needed.
So as the conclusion. the Rubber-tired roller is more suitable for this kind of project because it can being use for a various kind of soil besides reduce the amount of equipment that needed for the project and saving the cost for the project.
